Gynecology Q & A
What is a gynecology exam?
Our doctors want you to feel comfortable in the office for your visit. We will spend time talking with you, especially during your first visit. It's important for us to get to know you and your individual health concerns. Then, our doctor will perform both a physical and pelvic exam.
The physical exam includes your height and weight measurements. We will check urine, blood pressure, heart rate, and a clinical breast exam.
During the pelvic exam, Our doctor examines your external and internal sex organs. You will sit on a special gynecological table. To get a clear view of your internal organs, he inserts a speculum into your vagina. Our doctors use palpation, an examination technique of your internal organs. The doctor does this through the touch of your skin.
During the internal exam, the doctor may also do a pap smear. This will test for changes in cell abnormalities that could be an early sign of cervical cancer.
What the most common medical concerns women have?
During your gynecology exam, our doctor looks for medical concerns, such as:
- Heavy bleeding or painful periods
- Pelvic pain or discomfort
- Pelvic masses such as myomas or ovarian cysts
- Sexually transmitted diseases like HPV and Chlamydia
- Endometriosis
- Abnormal Pap smear
- Infertility
What happens if my Pap smear is abnormal?
If your Pap test result is abnormal, our doctor will suggest a second test to confirm the abnormality. The abnormal cervical cells cause concern because of their likelihood of becoming cancerous.
If abnormal cells exist, the doctor performs a colposcopy using the DYSIS® Colposcope. This will provide him a better look at your cervix. This special colposcope uses modern, advanced technology. The colposcope will magnify the tissue in your cervix. This will give us a digital image to map out cell abnormalities to give you a more accurate diagnosis. If he finds abnormalities, our doctor may do a biopsy to check the cells for cancer.
Our doctors may also recommend Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure or LEEP. This is a minimally invasive procedure, which the doctor completes in the office. The procedure removes abnormal cells from your cervix.
